The United Nations has released the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Report 2025, providing the only official assessment of global progress toward the 2030 Agenda. With just five years remaining, the report offers a sobering look at where the world stands—and where urgent action is needed.

Prepared by UN DESA in partnership with over 50 international agencies, the report draws on data from 200+ countries. It highlights key achievements since 2015, such as improved access to education, maternal and child health, and a rise in renewable energy use. However, it also warns that only 35% of SDG targets are showing adequate progress, while 18% have actually regressed.

Health indicators raise further concern. While maternal and child mortality rates have declined and AIDS-related deaths have halved, non-communicable diseases now claim 18 million lives annually under age 70. Vaccine systems remain fragile post-pandemic, and a global health workforce shortage persists.

To meet the SDG goals by 2030, the report calls for stronger domestic investment, country-led data systems, and a shift from short-term aid projects to long-term, system-wide solutions.
