World Diabetes Day

In 1991, World Diabetes Day (WDD) was initiated by IDF and the World Health Organization in order to grow concerns about the escalating health threat posed by diabetes. in 2006, With the passage of United Nation Resolution 61/225, world diabetes day became an official United Nations Day. It is celebrated on 14th of November every year, which is the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, co-discoverer of insulin along with Charles Best in 1922.
It is the world’s huge diabetes awareness campaign reaching more than 1 billion people globally in more than 160 nations. This campaign brings attention to issues of paramount importance to the diabetes world and keeps diabetes firmly in the public and political spotlight.
The aim of World Diabetes Day campaign are:
- It is a great platform to promote International Diabetes Federation (IDF) advocacy efforts throughout the year.
- It is a Global driver to promote the importance of taking coordinated and concerted actions to confront diabetes as a critical global health issue
- A blue circle logo represents the campaign which was adopted in 2007 after the passage of the UN Resolution on diabetes. The accepted global symbol for diabetes awareness is blue circle which signifies unity of the global diabetes community in response to the diabetes epidemic.
The theme for World Diabetes Day 2021-23 is
"Access to Diabetes Care"
